The “deadliest mile in America” claimed the life of a 31-year-old man from Davie after his truck hit and flipped over a guardrail on I-95. The crash took place on the entrance ramp from State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The driver’s vehicle fell into a construction zone before he was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The truck hit another car that was parked at the construction site, but that passenger was not injured.
Investigators have yet to release the victim’s name.
The construction zone where the crash occurred is part of the 95 Express Phase 3C project according to the spokesperson for Florida’s Department of Transportation District 4, Guillermo Canedo. Canedo also explained that flashing lights and rumble strips were installed to “jar people’s attention” after two similar crashes took place at the same concrete guardrail. These two incidents happened within a span of 24 hours.
This road was named the “deadliest mile” because of its faults and recurring motor vehicle accidents. These faults include poor visibility, complicated ramps, and drivers traveling at high speeds.
A study conducted by 1Point21 Interactive digital agency and Elk & Elk personal injury law firm shows that I-95 sees 50 times more fatal car accidents than the average highway mile. The study looked at 91,000 accidents and found that 24 people died in 23 car crashes between 2000 and 2019.
The I-95 construction is expected to be completed by 2025 after the modifications to the I-95/SR 84 interchange modifications are complete.
