18-year-old causes fatal, five-car accident in Las Vegas

18-year-old, Jerry Madera, was traveling at a high rate of speed on Washington Avenue on Tuesday afternoon before he collided with multiple other vehicles.

Police stated that Madera’s Toyota failed to stop at a red light at the intersection with Torrey Pines Drive. As he ran the light, a Mazda was turning left on a green signal onto Washington. Debris from the accident hit a BMW nearby, causing minor damage.

The front of the Toyota slammed into the left side of the Mazda and then the left side of another vehicle that was stopped at a red light. Madera’s vehicle then hit the front of another Toyota, which caused them to rear-end a Buick.

Madera’s vehicle eventually came to rest in between the vehicles and cough on fire. Madera and the 33-year-old Mazda driver were transported to University Medical Center to be treated for their injuries.

The driver of the Mazda was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Madera was booked into the Clark County Detention Center while still in the hospital. He is charged with reckless driving and other DUI-related charges.

The driver of the other Toyota sustained minor injuries, but no additional injuries were reported.
