A judge in Florida rejected a plea deal for an 18-year-old that caused a fatal car accident last year. Prosecutors and an attorney agreed to a 10-year sentence last month, which the judge still feels is too lenient. The Palm Beach Judge told Christopher Garrett’s lawyers to reach a new deal or to prepare for trial.
Garrett is accused of killing four individuals after stealing a utility vehicle from Rapids Water Park. He was traveling at over 100 mph until he ran a red light and struck a SUV that was making a turn.
He was 17 at the time, but the state attorney’s office decided to try him as an adult. Garrett is facing charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, and grand theft. The crash killed 2 adults, a 14-year-old, and a 17-year-old.
Police in West Palm Beach attempted to stop the vehicle until the chase was reportedly too dangerous to intervene.
The case is still ongoing, and the next hearing is scheduled for September 27th.
