If you have been involved in an accident, the law requires everyone to remain at the scene. There are major consequences to fleeing the scene and can substantially affect the amount of compensation you receive.
If someone else flees the scene, you will still be able to receive compensation. An attorney can guide you on what steps to take if you are involved in this type of situation:
Note any information
It is important to try to make note of any identifying information that can help authorities figure out who fled. If possible, try to take a picture of the license plate or remember any characteristics of their vehicle. This includes bumper stickers, tinted windows, or any upgrades on the car.
Call the police
Calling the authorities will increase your chances of finding the individual that fled the scene. If you choose to file a personal injury lawsuit, an officer’s report will be valuable.
Find witnesses
After the accident occurs, try to get the contact information of any bystanders that might have witnessed the accident. Witness testimonies will help an attorney prove your damages and they will also be included in the police report.
Notify your insurance company
If you have been injured or your property is damaged, contact your insurance company as soon as possible. If the driver is never identified, it is possible to recover under your policy. If you wait too long, you might not have a chance to receive maximum compensation.
