A passenger train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago collided with a dump truck yesterday in a rural area in Missouri. The accident killed three people and injured dozens more after several of the rail cars fell off the tracks and onto their sides.
Missouri State Highway Patrol stated that two of the people killed were on the train and the other was a passenger in the truck.
Authorities could not share exactly how many people were injured, but near hospitals reported that more than 40 people arrived and more were expected to show.
Helicopter footage of the site showed emergency responders using ladders to climb into the rail cars on their side. There were six helicopters at the site awaiting patients.
The accident occurred at a rural intersection on a road with no lights or electronic controls. The Amtrak train was carrying 243 passengers and 12 members at the time of the crash.
There were 16 younger individuals and eight adults from two Boy Scout troops that were traveling back home on the train. The Scout leaders were able to provide first aid to several passengers and the driver of the truck. None of the troop members were seriously injured.
There were also several Pleasent Ridge High School students from Kansas onboard. They were traveling to a Future Business Leaders of America conference in Chicago.
Investigators stated that it is too early to understand why the truck was on the tracks, but they will be closed for days as the investigation is ongoing.
