California family rescued after their car falls down a 500-foot cliff

Authorities responded to an accident after a California firefighter noticed a road marker was down as he was passing by. He pulled over and realized a vehicle had fallen 500 feet into a ditch in Mariposa County.  This led him to believe that there was a possible traffic accident.

Scott Anderson was traveling with his 11-year-old son when he lost control of his vehicle while trying to make a turn in the rain. His car flipped multiple times and then tumbled off a cliff, out of sight.

There was a 4-hour operation to attempt to get the victims back to safety. The operation was complicated by the bad weather, and it is in an extremely rural area. A small rescue team  oversaw pulling the two up the steep canyon.

The team was using 600-foot ropes, but still had about 100 feet left when they reached the victims according to the Mariposa County Sheriff.

Anderson and his son only suffered minor injuries. The last update from authorities stated that they are still being kept in a nearby hospital and that they were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
