Authorities responded to a fatal collision in South Carolina that caused a hazardous material spill this morning. The spill was caused by an accident between an 18-wheeler and at least one other vehicle. A shelter in place order was issued as emergency responders determined what was spilled on I-77.
The wreck occurred in the southbound lanes but managed to block all of the lanes on the interstate.
The spill became hazardous when responders attempted to put a fire out that engulfed the semi-truck. This caused smoke to emerge from the chemicals that were inside the tractor trailer.
At around 9:45 a.m., authorities determined that the hazardous material was ammonium sulfate. The Fairfield County Fire Service stated that there is no immediate danger to anyone’s life or health.
Additionally, the accident caused a major traffic jam near the 31-mile marker on I-77. Northbound vehicles were backed up for miles and people were advised to stay clear of the area.
There is no information on the number of people killed or how many vehicles were involved. There is also no word on how the accident happened.
The driver of the semi was taken to a nearby hospital, but there has been no update on his condition.
