Suspected Drunk Driver Dead After Collision with Sheriff’s Deputy

Investigations continue after a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy was hit by a suspected drunk driver. 

A 44-year-old man was driving southbound in a Nissan Altima on 12399 Joes Road before he made an unsafe left turn at a flashing yellow light. The deputy was driving northbound on Jones road until both vehicles collided at the light. The deputy’s car proceeded to hit a utility pole. 

The suspected drunk driver went into cardiac arrest at the scene. First responders administered CPR and were able to bring him back to life. He was then taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. 

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez made a statement on Twitter explaining that the driver of the Nissan later died at the hospital. The sheriff extended his condolences to the family.  

The deputy was also taken to a nearby hospital but was later released. 

Authorities are still investigating the incident due to the suspicion of the driver being intoxicated.

Drunk Driving in Texas 

Data collected by the Texas Department of Transportation in 2019 shows that 813 fatal accidents were caused by drunk drivers. 

914 individuals have been killed due to drunk driving and the total for DUI-related crashes sits at 24,714.
