The Houston Police Department was allegedly pursuing a 16-year-old driver when he hit another vehicle with two passengers, former rugby coach Pedrie Wannenburg and his eight-year-old son.
Pedrie Wannenburg would be pronounced dead at the scene, and this sparked a big reaction from the communities he was a part of. Wannenburg was a beloved coach and would coach for many different organizations including the Austin Elite Rugby in the North American Major Rugby League, and he would also be the head coach for Rice University’s Rugby Club.
Wannenburg’s eight-year-old son was also in the vehicle, and he was taken by LifeFlight to the nearest hospital as he suffered critical injuries.
The 16-year-old who was allegedly fleeing the authorities was arrested and was taken to the hospital to treat his injuries. He is facing charges of felony murder, reckless aggravated assault, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Many people in the community are mourning the loss of Wannenburg as he affected many of those players’ lives.
