Tesla is being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after a deadly crash occurred on July 6th. This is the 37th special crash investigation that has been opened against Tesla.
The 2015 Model S rear-ended a Walmart semi-truck at a rest area off I-75 in Florida. Authorities stated that the Tesla exited the highway and traveled to the rest stop before colliding with the trailer. It is not clear how fast the vehicle was moving, but the damage shows that it could have been at a highway speed.
The accident killed the two occupants of the vehicle. Pictures show that the Tesla was pinned against the semi with its roof sheared almost completely off.
Tesla has had a lengthy history of accidents involving colliding with stationary emergency vehicles and semi-trucks while on Autopilot.
Scrutiny towards Autopilot has increased after the crashes involving Teslas. The other 36 crash investigations opened by the NHTSA have involved Autopilot playing a suspected role in the accidents. There have been 17 total fatalities in all of these accidents that are being investigated.
The NHTSA has found that on average, Teslas operating on Autopilot usually disengage less than one second before impact.
