Three teens killed in tragic accident in Staten Island

Three teens have died and multiple people are injured after a fatal collision between a Mustang and Yukon. The Mustang slammed into a tree, which caused the car to split in half and eject two of the passengers on Sunday night in Pleasant Plains. The vehicle proceeded to hit a utility pole.

An investigation determined that the Mustang was traveling east on Hylan Boulevard at a very high speed. The Yukon was traveling west on Hylan Boulevard.

The Yukon was making a left turn onto Richard Avenue when the Mustang swerved into the right lane. The Yukon collided with the Mustang on its driver’s side. This caused the passenger side to strike a tree.

15-year-old Jesie Gil and Ashley Rodriguez were the two ejected from the vehicle. They were both pronounced dead at the scene. 16-year-old Fernanda Gil was sitting in the front passenger seat and died at Staten Island University Hospital.

The driver of the Mustang was a 16-year-old boy who was taken to Staten Island University Hospital in a critical, but stable condition. He only had a learner’s permit at the time of the accident.

According to the state, there should have been an adult in the car, but no charges have been filed against the teen at this time.

The driver of the Yukon was a 47-year-old man that was transferred to the hospital with minor injuries. His passengers, women ages 44 and 19, an 11-year-old girl, and a 23-year-old man were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Yukon was taken into custody for having an alleged suspended driver’s license.

NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating the accident.
