Feds have released more information about the tragic accident that killed college golfers and their head coach on March 15th of this year.
A preliminary investigation suggested that a 13-year-old boy was driving the vehicle that hit the passenger can carrying the golfers. After further testing, investigators found that the father of the boy, Henrich Siemens, was driving the truck. The DNA tests also found that the father had methamphetamine in his system.
The accident happened around 8 p.m. 30 miles from the Texas and New Mexico border. Siemens was driving the truck before it crossed the center into oncoming traffic. The vehicles then collided and killed nine people.
Siemens and his son died in the crash along with six of the golf team member and their coach. Two others on the team were seriously injured.
At first, the National Transportation Safety Board stated that Siemens left tire had blown out, causing the accident. However, the NTSB has now reported that there is no evidence supporting low tire pressure or a blowout.
The NTSB found that the highway by the scene of the crash is straight, but there is no lighting.
The passengers in the van were identified as coach Tyler James, 26; golfers Mauricio Sanchez, 19; Travis Garcia, 19; Jackson Zinn, 22; Karisa Raines, 21; Laci Stone, 18; and Tiago Sousa, 18.
